Jumanji 35
Marie Havel was born in 1990 in Soissons she lives and works in Montpellier (South of France). The artist is a graduate from the Fine Arts School (Beaux-Arts) of Montpellier. Between modelling and drawing, Marie Havel places her work in a transcription of a continuous cycle of construction and disappearance. Her approach takes its source in known places, the artist magnifies the ruin by envisaging thus “to reactivate this one and to define it like means of construction”.
Through this series I wished to freeze the moment when the game comes to its end, when its elements begin to disperse and when, in doing so, one no longer knows if they fall or if they spread out, spread out before becoming again simple game kits, construction kits. It is also a question here of setting up a vain structure. An ephemeral arrangement whose fall can already be predicted. To hold the elements in their fall, to offer a persistence to this particularly furtive in-between state of the game.
I connect the elements with vegetation that is part of this state of ruin. A rebellious vegetation evocative of nuisances, of a state of ruin. This vegetation joins the elements together and offers a respite, a time to observe an interrupted fall, like a suspended endgame, with no winner or loser. It is a question of exploring games, childhood and its practices more widely, as being not only moments of experimentation but also the place where failure, loss and the vain act are learned.
